How to exercise in the hot weather



Ok i realise we are already half way through summer, but lets face it gyms have only just reopened, and we have only just found our fitness mojo again.


So here it is - how to exercise safely in the heat.


1. Dress Appropriately. This might sound like a stupid thing to say, but exercising in the heat in jogging bottoms and a hoody will not help you lose more weight!!!! Yes it will make you sweat more, but sweating is just your bodies way of cooling yourself down. So if it is hot - leave the woolies at home!


2. Keep hydrated. Whether it is water, juice, a sports drink make sure it is topped up. Generally a client will need 1 ml or water for every calorie they burn. So generally if you are burning 2500 calories a day you will need 2.5 litres of water a day. So keep drinking after your workout to avoid dehydration.


3. If you are outside don't forget sun cream. You may not realise your skin is burning when you workout because your sweat is cooling you down, but I guarantee an hour in the sun can give you some nasty tan lines not to mention skin damage.


4. Timing is everything. The sun is at its highest position between 10am to 3pm. So if you are planning a workout during these times you know whether you are inside or outside it will be a hot one. If you cannot avoid these hours, reduce the intensity of your workout and include lots of water breaks. If you feel unwell at anytime please alert your instructor or take yourself to a cool place.


If you are exercising in a gym at the moment, be aware some gyms have turned off their air conditioning system due to transmission of COVID-19. Please also ensure you are wiping everything down as no one likes a sweaty puddle!
